Spritz

The Favorite Aperitivo of Italy

Summertime in Italy is Spritz time! In the summer it is especially refreshing to enjoy the icy cool refreshing Spritz, but of course Italians enjoy them year round. In the winter they are relaxing after skiing “Apri Ski” in the “After Ski” Party with a tall orange-tinted Spritz. In every outdoor cafe around 5:00 you will see Italians enjoying a Spritz with little bowls of chips, peanuts and olives.

Spritz is always a good idea!

So what is the Spritz? It is a large wine glass filled with ice, add a shot of Campari or Aperol, a heavy splash of Prosecco and top it with tonic water and an orange wedge. Campari or Aperol are red colored Italian liquor that is bitter. Campari is more bitter than Aperol and Italians prefer it that way. Most American prefer it with Aperol because it is a little sweeter while still maintaining its bitter flavor. Prosecco is a sparkling white wine from the Veneto region. Instead of tonic some people use sparkling water, but again, we like things a little sweeter so we prefer the tonic.
