What can be better than Apple Pie? Not much, ….but maybe Apple Crisp! If my husband is going to request a dessert, it’s going to be Apple Pie, but then sometimes he hesitates and changes it to Apple Crisp. I’m always happy to make Apple Crisp instead of Apple Pie because it’s so much easier! No crust to roll out and form, just oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, butter and flour tossed together and dumped on top of sliced apples and baked. I actually agree that it is better than Apple Pie, I mean, all of that brown sugar goodness mingled with fragrant cinnamon and crunchy oats! So delicious with a dollop of vanilla ice cream, it’s even better the next day for breakfast! Ice cream and all!
Apple Brown Sugar Crisp
Ingredients:
- 4 cups peeled and sliced apples
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 flour
1/2 cup rolled oats (oatmeal) - 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/3 cup soft butter
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350 F
- Peel and slice 4-5 apples and place in a baking dish, approximately 9” x 9”
- Measure out the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and oats in a large bowl.
- Slice or cube up 1/3 cup of butter
- Mix butter and dry ingredients together using a hand pastry blender, I always just use a whisk. You want to keep cutting up the butter with the whisk until it mixes with the dry ingredients like crumbles.
- Dump the crumbles on top of the apples in an even layer
- Bake in a 350 F oven for 30 minutes or until apples are fork tender and the crumbles on top are toasted
- Serve with a dollop of vanilla ice cream
